God is NOT Love

To start with, yes, I ripped off the title from Christopher Hitchens’ book “God is Not Good.” But, hey, when you have a good title, you have a good title.

So, why am I writing this? Well, a few years ago I went to a lecture about religion at a local bookstore by a professor from a Christian university. I don’t remember what his name was or even what school he was from. I just remember what he concluded in his speech, and it has stuck with me. Every once in a while it pops into my head, and it did again today.

After his years of religious studies and teaching, this professor took one phrase from the bible that is attributed to Jesus. I don’t remember what the phrase was (my memory isn’t exactly the best), but I DO clearly remember him saying that based on that phrase, and his conclusions from the texts of the Abrahamic religions that “God is love.” To him, Islam, Judaism and Christianity all boil down to that one short statement.

I don’t know why this keeps coming up in my brain. But every time it does, I think about how rather absurd that statement was. I didn’t say anything at the time. I wasn’t there to cause trouble or start challenging everything he said. I was there to listen and hear him out.

But, a few years later, here I am writing this and outright declaring that I cannot figure out how this guy could possibly read these texts and…
